Unboxing and First Impressions
I recently purchased the Abu Garcia PRO MAX combo from a local outdoor store for $99. It's a seven-foot medium-heavy baitcaster, boasting eight bearings and a light, balanced feel. The 24-ton graphite rod felt surprisingly comfortable in my hand, even before casting.

The reel itself features a one-piece graphite frame, a power disc drag system, brass gears, and stainless steel guides with titanium oxide inserts. Initial impressions were very positive; the build quality seemed excellent for the price point.

Line and Lure Selection
I spooled the reel with 17-pound P-line fluorocarbon, a first for me. I decided to pair it with a Googan Squad Heavy Hammer hook (size 3/0) and a weightless Googan Squad Explode Toad in green pumpkin pearl.

These toads are a unique design, dark green pumpkin on one side and pearl on the other, allowing for versatility in presentation. I planned to use this feature to adjust the lure's appearance depending on water conditions.
Initial Casting and Fishing Experience
Before even casting, I experienced a backlash due to leaving the bail open while tying on the hook. This highlighted potential spool memory issues with the fluorocarbon line. I kept the drag locked down initially to manage this and get a feel for the reel.

The fishing itself didn’t yield any bites. However, it was a cold day, and time was limited. I mainly focused on testing the rod and reel’s performance and casting feel. The shorter rod was easier to manage than some of my other rods
Final Verdict
The Abu Garcia PRO MAX combo performed smoothly, despite the initial backlash issue and lack of fish. For $99, the build quality and casting feel are impressive. The 7:1 gear ratio allows for versatility in retrieve speed.

While I didn’t catch any fish during this particular outing, that's inherent to fishing. The rod's seven-foot length and medium-heavy action proved comfortable and effective for topwater fishing with the Explode Toad. Overall, it's a great budget-friendly option for anglers looking for a reliable baitcaster setup.
